Wide Area LiDAR

LiDAR uses infrared lasers to precisely measure distance and direction. Once processed, this data creates accurate 3D point clouds of terrain and structures which can be imported directly into most all GIS, CAD or survey software for visualization and exploitation. Historically, this capability required the complexity and cost of manned aircraft due to the size, weight and power requirements of the sensor. New technology now allows better resolution from smaller LiDAR units able to be carried aboard unmanned systems. Simpler and more cost effective, this ability to measure land and infrastructure in near real time, even in remote or difficult to reach areas, allows projects to be planned and monitored safely and efficiently without putting humans at risk in low and slow flying manned aircraft.

While traditional LiDAR loses the color data, XG Imaging can combine the LiDAR data with concurrent or consecutive standard imagery to 'colorize' your LiDAR cloud and create a true digital twin of your project area.

Regardless of sensor chosen, all our flight data is PPK corrected using a local base station providing better-than-survey grade absolute accuracy.

How Does LiDAR Work for You?

Environmental Monitoring

Having access to 3D maps of vegetation and topography provides accurate analyses of changes in things like vegetation cover and soil erosion.

Surveying

LiDAR allows the drone to create detailed maps on land and infrastructure including roads, bridges, and buildings.

These maps can be used for design and planning purposes, while also serving to monitor change over time.

Construction

Surveying of construction sites using drone technology allows for precise models to be created more safely and efficiently.

These models allow for more precise planning and management of construction projects.

Forestry

With precise maps and imaging of all terrain, this process allows foresters to measure the height and diameter of trees, track growth curves, and calculate biomass for carbon sequestration. This technology changes the historical forest sampling paradigm - you can generate a 3D point cloud of the whole area and measure any tree from your desk! Better yet, train AI or ML to take the measurements for you.
